18 April 2008 Firebird v2.1 Final Release Dmitry Yemanov
The Firebird Project is proud to announce the final Firebird v2.1.0 release.

This version offers you many new features and improvements, as well as tons of bugfixes. New ports are also available.

The release notes: http://www.firebirdsql.org/rlsnotes/Firebird-2.1-ReleaseNotes.pdf

The source code tarball and binaries: http://www.firebirdsql.org/index.php?op=files&id=engine_210

Thanks to everyone involved in newsgroup discussions and field testing, it would be impossible to complete this release without your help.

28 March 2008 Get prepared for Firebird V2.5 Alpha Dmitry Yemanov
The codebase will be tagged for Alpha 1 as soon as v2.0.4 RC1 and v2.1 Final are released. This means 10-15 days available to finalize the ODS changes and complete the major refactoring and synchronization efforts.

We expect only one Alpha version to be released. The next one will be Beta 1 which should be feature complete. No new ODS changes are allowed for Beta, unless some bugs would require fixing.

Besides the features already scheduled for v2.5 in the tracker, we have two features that the Foundation TTG (technical task group) has agreed to consider for this release during the Alpha stage: (1) tracing facility by Nickolay Samofatov and (2) cross-database EXECUTE STATEMENT implementation by Vlad Khorsun. They will be reviewed and discussed soon in Firebird-devel, with an intention to be committed into the codebase before Beta.

Unfortunately, provided that the "external stored procedures" feature has major issues we still cannot resolve in the agreement (e.g. security and external engine API), it doesn't seem to fit the v2.5 timeframe and is going to be postponed. Sad but true.

23 January 2008 Firebird Roadmap 2008 Dmitry Yemanov
The project roadmap for the year 2008 has been published at our web wite, you can check it out here.

The key idea behind the past two roadmaps is the incremental step-by-step path to the effectively multi-threaded engine targeted for v3.0, with stable intermediate releases posted regularly (aka short release cycle). Currently, release v2.1 is in the RC stage and yet another intermediate release v2.5 is scheduled for this year. The primary development efforts in the year 2008 are dedicated to the multi-threading abilities, as well as the architectural work and some SQL features. More information about the release v2.5 will follow.

Version series v1.5.x and v2.0.x are continued to be maintained by the project, with a few point releases scheduled for this year as well.

22 December 2006 Vulcan snapshots Dmitry Yemanov
Daily snapshot builds of the Vulcan branch are available for testing at http://www.firebirdsql.org/download/snapshot_builds/vulcan/.

We would appreciate any feedback about them, as it would allow us to solve the potential issues with the upcoming FB 3.0 release earlier.

19 December 2006 Altering procedures in use Dmitry Yemanov
As you might know, Firebird 2.0 no longer allows to alter/drop procedures that are used by active statements. However, we've got many requests from customers to restore the previous behaviour, because now it's impossible to upgrade metadata under load. While we don't consider this practice safe, I'd like to report that the new limitation is removed in the v2.0.1 release, thus rolling back to the prior logic. All potentially confusing situations (when two different versions of the procedure may coexist in memory simultaneously) are reported in firebird.log.
